19th century bronze devil in the style of Jean-Jacques Feuchère.
The devil with his tongue stuck out and his wings outstretched, standing with his left paw on the head and shell of a turtle, on a rectangular black marble base.
Nice carving detail in the devil's visible spine, as well as his small horns and the pronounced cartilage in the wings.
Size: 23cm high, 17cm wide, 12cm deep
Satanic subjects were popular among Romantic artists of the 1830s, who felt inspired by literary works such as Dante's "Inferno" (1303-1321), Milton's "Paradise Lost" (1667), and "Faust" by Goethe (1808).
